History of Upputhara Grama Panchayat
Upputhara Grama Panchayat is an important Grama Panchayat located in the eastern highlands of Idukki district. The present-day Upputhara region was once a densely forested area. During the latter part of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, migrant farmers from various parts of central Kerala began to arrive and settle here.
In the early days, the region was surrounded by forest lands, and transportation facilities and basic infrastructure were very limited. It was through the hard work of the settlers that the forest lands were gradually made suitable for cultivation. With the widespread cultivation of cardamom, pepper, coffee, and later tea, the economic development of the region began.
After Independence, basic facilities such as roads, educational institutions, health centres, and electricity gradually developed. As the agriculture-based economy became stronger, the population also increased. After the formation of the Panchayat, various development projects were implemented, and Upputhara gradually developed into an important centre of rural development.
Today, Upputhara Panchayat has an important position in the agricultural and educational sectors. The region is particularly notable for the production of spice crops such as cardamom, pepper, and coffee. The natural beauty of the Western Ghats and its rich agricultural heritage are the major features of Upputhara.
